Portable Appliance Testing Across Central Scotland
Portable Appliance Testing — PAT testing — is the process of inspecting and testing electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. While there is no single legal requirement that mandates PAT testing by name, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 place a clear duty on employers, landlords, and duty holders to ensure that electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the recognised, practical method of demonstrating compliance with that duty.
Myles Electrical provides PAT testing services for offices, rental properties, commercial premises, construction sites, and any other environment where portable electrical equipment is in use. We cover Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk, South Lanarkshire, West Lothian, and Ayrshire.
Who Needs PAT Testing?
If you employ people, rent property, manage a commercial building, or operate a venue, you have a responsibility to ensure that the electrical equipment on your premises is safe. This applies to everything from kettles and desk fans in an office to power tools on a construction site. Landlords who provide furnished properties — including white goods — have an equivalent duty of care to their tenants.
Insurance companies frequently require evidence of PAT testing as a condition of cover, and health and safety audits routinely check for up-to-date PAT records. Having a current PAT register and valid test labels on your equipment protects you legally, commercially, and practically.
What Does PAT Testing Involve?
Each appliance undergoes a visual inspection followed by a series of electrical tests appropriate to the appliance class and construction. These typically include earth continuity testing, insulation resistance testing, and a functional check. The results are recorded on an asset register that details each item, its location, the test results, and the pass or fail status.
Appliances that pass are labelled with a test sticker showing the date of testing and the next test due date. Any appliance that fails is clearly marked, and we will advise you on whether it can be repaired or should be taken out of service.
Frequency of Testing
The IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment provides guidance on testing intervals based on the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used. A desk lamp in a low-risk office environment requires less frequent testing than a power tool on a construction site. We will advise you on the appropriate testing interval for your equipment and environment, and can set up a recurring schedule so you never miss a renewal.
PAT Testing for Property Portfolios
For businesses with high daytime electricity consumption — offices, workshops, warehouses, retail premises — solar PV offers an immediate and measurable reduction in operating costs. We design and install commercial systems with load management, monitoring, and maintenance packages to ensure your investment delivers returns throughout its 25-year lifespan.
