Emergency Lighting Installation and Testing Across Central Scotland
Emergency lighting is a legal requirement in workplaces, commercial premises, HMOs, and communal areas of residential buildings. Its purpose is simple: to provide sufficient illumination for safe evacuation in the event of a power failure or emergency. The consequences of non-compliance range from enforcement notices and fines to — in the worst case — a preventable injury or death.
Myles Electrical designs, installs, and tests emergency lighting systems to BS 5266 across Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk, South Lanarkshire, West Lothian, and Ayrshire. Whether you need a new installation for a building that currently lacks emergency lighting, a replacement of obsolete fittings, or the annual testing and certification required to maintain compliance, we provide a complete, auditable service.
Who Needs Emergency Lighting?
Any non-domestic premises or shared residential area where people may need to evacuate in an emergency requires emergency lighting. This includes offices, shops, restaurants, pubs, warehouses, factories, churches, schools, care homes, HMOs, and the communal corridors, stairwells, and car parks of residential developments. If a fire risk assessment has identified the need for emergency lighting in your premises, you are legally obligated to install and maintain it.
Design and Installation
Emergency lighting design is governed by BS 5266 and must take into account the building layout, escape routes, high-risk task areas, and the location of fire safety equipment. We design systems that meet the standard’s requirements for illumination levels, duration, and coverage — ensuring that every escape route, exit, change of direction, stairway, and intersection is adequately lit in the event of a mains failure.
We install maintained and non-maintained emergency luminaires, illuminated exit signs, and central battery systems depending on the requirements of the premises. All installations are fully tested and certified on completion.
Annual Testing and Certification
Emergency lighting must be tested regularly to ensure it will function when needed. BS 5266 requires monthly brief functional tests and an annual full-duration discharge test. Many building owners and managers are unaware of the annual test requirement, or carry out the monthly checks but neglect the more rigorous annual test.
We provide a full annual testing service that includes the three-hour discharge test, verification of all luminaires, battery condition assessment, and a formal test certificate for your fire safety records. We also offer a monthly testing service for clients who prefer to outsource this responsibility entirely.
HMO Compliance
Houses in Multiple Occupation in Scotland are subject to specific licensing conditions that include emergency lighting in communal areas and escape routes. If you are a landlord applying for or renewing an HMO licence, we can survey your property, design a compliant emergency lighting scheme, install the fittings, and provide the certification your licensing authority requires.
