Full and Partial House Rewires Across Central Scotland

A rewire is one of the most significant investments you can make in your property. It replaces outdated, potentially dangerous wiring with a modern, safe installation that meets the current edition of the IET Wiring Regulations. If your property was built or last rewired more than 25 to 30 years ago, the chances are that the wiring is approaching or has exceeded its expected lifespan.

At Myles Electrical, we carry out full and partial rewires for homeowners, landlords, and property developers across Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk, South Lanarkshire, West Lothian, and Ayrshire. Every rewire is planned around your circumstances, carried out to the highest standard, and fully certified on completion.

When Does a Property Need a Rewire?

Several indicators suggest that a rewire may be necessary. If your property still has a fuse box rather than a modern consumer unit with RCD protection, if the wiring uses old rubber, fabric, or lead-sheathed cable rather than modern PVC twin-and-earth, or if an EICR has returned C1 or C2 codes relating to the condition of the fixed wiring, a rewire should be considered.

Other signs include frequent tripping of circuit breakers without an obvious cause, discoloured or warm sockets and switches, a lack of earthing to parts of the installation, or an insufficient number of circuits for modern electrical demand. A property that was wired for 1960s appliance loads is not designed to handle modern kitchens, home offices, EV chargers, and high-power showers safely.

Full Rewire vs Partial Rewire

A full rewire replaces all fixed wiring, accessories, and the consumer unit throughout the property. This is typically necessary where the existing wiring has deteriorated beyond safe use, or where the property is being renovated to a standard that requires a complete new installation.

A partial rewire addresses specific areas of concern — for example, replacing the wiring in a kitchen and bathroom while leaving newer circuits intact, or upgrading the lighting circuits in a property where the power circuits are still in good condition. We will always advise honestly on which approach is appropriate for your property, based on the condition of the existing installation rather than a desire to maximise the scope of work.

What to Expect During a Rewire

A rewire is intrusive work. It requires access to floors, walls, and ceilings to route new cable, and there will be periods during the job where parts of the property are without power. We plan every rewire carefully to minimise disruption, discuss access requirements and timescales in advance, and work methodically room by room to restore power as quickly as possible in each area.

For a typical three-bedroom house, a full rewire takes approximately five to seven working days. We will provide a detailed schedule before work begins so you know exactly what to expect and can plan accordingly. Dust sheets, protective coverings, and a thorough clean-up at the end of each day are standard — not optional extras.

What Is Included

Every Myles Electrical rewire includes a new 18th Edition consumer unit with RCD protection, new PVC twin-and-earth cabling to all circuits, new socket outlets and light switches throughout, new light fittings where required, hardwired smoke and heat detection compliant with Scottish building regulations, full testing and certification (Electrical Installation Certificate), and notification to the relevant building standards authority where required.

Rewires for Landlords and Developers

If you are renovating a property for rental or resale, integrating the rewire into the wider renovation programme is critical for efficiency. We coordinate with other trades to ensure the first fix is completed before plastering and the second fix follows at the right point in the programme. For landlords managing multiple properties, we can schedule rewires across your portfolio to spread cost and minimise void periods.

Every property is different, and rewire costs depend on the size of the property, the number of circuits required, the accessibility of the existing wiring routes, and the scope of any associated work such as smoke detection or consumer unit upgrades.
